Whomever thinks hip hop is dead, you need only walk into Arlene's Grocery on a Thursday night. Our emcee host "Phaseone" was so authentic its inspiring. Accompanied by Lenny Reece (drummer of "Gentei Kaijo") and fellow emcee "The Lesson," they produced a musical experience that transcends the thought of entertainment.
This event labored itself on collaboration, not competition, as other singers, musicians, and emcees worked together to interact with audience members to create music. Vocalist and emcees tag team, demonstrating a unity of styles as they forge impromptu songs which included a chorus, bridge, and a few band solos.
The night was so much fun, I can honestly say I didn't want to leave. Everyone else must have felt the same way because the space was packed from start to long after they were finished. I would encourage everyone to make a special stop at their next open jam. It will more than likely be a night to remember.
